A history of restoration efforts for Vancouver Lake

Stevens, Thompson, & Runyan, Inc. 1973. Vancouver Lake Reclamation: Lake Dredging and Columbia River Channel. Port of Vancouver.

Efforts toward the reclamation of Vancouver Lake were formally initiated in 1965, as part of an overall area development project. The objectives of this effort, as publicly announced at the time, were as follows: "The study will be developed around flood control, navigation, agriculture, industry and recreation, all of which are in various degrees established and have special concern in future development of the area. Property owners, federal government, state government and various local entities in this area will be consulted and the information derived will be coordinated into the study. Aims of the study are to document established developments and equities, as well as to uncover ways and means for additional development, broaden concepts compatible with future growth and to determine what funds may be available from federal government, state government, local government and private interests." This formalization of efforts toward the reclamation of Vancouver Lake was in response to interest in the area that began prior to World War II and was again revitalized in 1945, when consideration was given to dredging the lake for storage of wartime ships.
