A history of restoration efforts for Vancouver Lake
Knutzen,
J.A. & R.D. Cardwell. 1984. Revised Draft Final Report for the Fisheries
Monitoring Program Vancouver Lake Restoration Project. Bellevue, WA: Envirosphere
Co. prepared for Cooper Consultants, Inc.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the restoration of Vancouver Lake on migratory anadromous and resident fish. The Vancouver Lake Restoration Project included dredging of Vancouver Lake and connecting the lake to the Columbia River via a one-mile long channel.
Fisheries agencies expressed interest in the effect of these alternatives on Columbia River migrating salmon and trout (i.e., salmonids) as well as Vancouver Lake resident game fish. Specifically, they were concerned that juvenile salmon and trout would enter Vancouver Lake through the flushing channel and suffer from poor water quality, incur predation by resident fish, or be unable to find their way downstream. There was also concern that migrating adult salmon and trout might stray into Vancouver Lake via Lake River and be unable to find their way back to the Columbia River. Our studies sought to answer these concerns using field studies that began April 1982 and terminated September 1984.
