A history of restoration efforts for Vancouver Lake

Dames & Moore. 1978a. Geotechnical Investigation: Proposed Flushing Channel Vancouver, Washington. Regional Planning Council of Clark County

The purpose of this investigation was to investigate subsurface conditions at the site of a proposed flushing channel and related facilities connecting Vancouver Lake and the Columbia River. The location of the channel, with respect to surface features, is shown on teh Plot PLan, Plate 1. The existing subsurface information in the vicinity of the flushing channel is relatively complete with respect to near surface fconditions but does not extend to the depths required for the design of the flushing facilities. The primary purpose of our geotechnical investigation was to ascertain the existing soil and groundwater conditions with respect to the following:

1. Appropriate side slopes for channel excavations.
2. Recommendations for earthwork including the practicality of using excavated channel materials for fill and dikes.
3. Recommendations for foundation support for culvert endwalls.
4. Recommendations regarding any unusual design or construction techniques which may be dictated by subsurface conditions.

In order to accomplish this purpose, the scope of our work included (1) review of preliminary analyses performed for our report dated October 3, 1977, (2) drilling, logging, and sampling of nine test borings along the proposed channel route, (3) laboratory testing to evaluate pertinent soil properties, (4) engineering analyses to serve as a basis for our recommendations, and (5) preparation of this report summarizing our findings.
