A history of restoration efforts for Vancouver Lake
Dunnell,
R.C., J.C. Chatters & L.V. Salo. 1973. Archaeological Survey of
the Vancouver Lake--Lake River Area, Clark County, Washington.
The project area is comprised by approximately 5,810 acres of alluvial deposit within the modern valley of the Columbia River adjacent to and extending northwest of the present location of Vancouver, Washington. This area includes not only the surfaces to be affected in the construction of the proposed levees and the immediately adjacent areas, but also the enclosed surface whose land use potential would be materially altered. Preliminary negotiations for the work were not commenced by either party until October of 1972, and since the results of archaeological investigation were required by the Corps at an early date, both the design and execution of the project reflect the stringencies of the time. In anticipation of the completion of negotiations, bibliographic research began somewhat in advance of the commencement of the contract; the field research was conducted between December 4, 1972 and January 8, 1973. Frozen ground and snow cover during the first two weeks followed by high water and excessively poor soil conditions further reduced the efficiency of the survey. In spite of these several constraints, the writers are relatively confident that within the limits set, the data herewith reported constitute an accurate and reasonable assessment of the archaeological remains within the project area.
